Application Case of an 18 Million kcal/h Thermal Oil Boiler in a Methanol-to-Hydrogen Project

Our client is a coal chemical enterprise. In 2023, the company launched a large-scale methanol-to-hydrogen project in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, with a designed hydrogen production capacity of 24,000 Nm³/h. The methanol steam reforming reaction requires maintaining a constant high temperature of 280-320°C, where thermal stability directly impacts methanol conversion rates and hydrogen purity. Simultaneously, the company must strictly control operating costs. Therefore, the project required an 18 million kcal thermal oil boiler capable of maintaining stable outlet oil temperatures at 280°C ± 5°C with PID ± 1°C control precision. It also needed to support 24/7 continuous operation while minimizing maintenance expenses.

Furthermore, the boiler achieves thermal efficiency exceeding 93%, compatible with locally sourced low-cost fuels in Wuhai. This reduces annual heating costs by approximately $380,000. Its high-temperature, low-pressure design incorporates comprehensive interlock protection systems, resulting in a failure rate below 0.5%. Fully automated operation requires only 2-3 maintenance personnel, significantly alleviating production and operational burdens while ensuring seamless production.

Following its simultaneous commissioning with the project, the boiler has demonstrated stable and reliable performance. Thermal oil temperature is consistently maintained at 280°C ± 3°C with zero fluctuations, ensuring the hydrogen production unit operates over 8,700 hours annually at full capacity output. This eliminates production interruptions caused by heating issues. Annual fuel savings reach 3,000 tons, reducing heating costs by approximately $380,000. Optimized design extends thermal oil lifespan, lowering consumable expenses and further enhancing production efficiency. During critical production phases like plant startup and load adjustments, the boiler delivers rapid response and precise regulation, consistently providing stable thermal support for the methanol steam reforming reaction.
