They are found throughout the boiler’s piping, drum, blowdown ports, and other areas. Valve malfunctions can lead to working fluid leaks, abnormal parameters, and even compromise the safe operation of the boiler. Many people encounter valve problems but don’t know how to resolve them. Below, we’ve summarized common boiler valve failures and their solutions—be sure to check them out.

Fault 1: Valve Leakage. This manifests as the seepage of working fluid (water, heat transfer oil, or steam) from valve connections or the valve stem. Causes: Aging or damaged seals, loose connections, worn valve stems, or blockages caused by debris inside the valve. Solution: Close the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the affected valve to isolate the working fluid; inspect the seals and replace them promptly if they are aged or damaged; tighten the connection bolts to ensure a proper seal; remove debris from inside the valve and check the valve stem for wear; if severely worn, replace the valve promptly.

Problem 2: Stiff or Jamming Valve Operation. Symptoms include the valve failing to open or close normally, or experiencing significant resistance and jamming during operation. Causes: Scale or debris blocking the valve interior; rust or lack of lubrication on the valve stem; wear on valve components. Solution: Close the globe valves upstream and downstream of the valve, then clean out scale and debris from inside the valve; lubricate the valve stem by applying lubricating oil and removing rust; inspect the valve components; if severe wear is found, repair or replace the valve promptly.

Problem 3: The valve is seized and cannot be opened or closed. Symptoms include the valve being completely unable to open or close, and the valve stem being unable to rotate. Causes: The valve has not been used for a long time and has rusted shut; large debris is blocking the valve; or valve components are damaged. Solution: Close the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the valve; remove rust from the valve stem and lubricate it, then try turning the valve stem slowly; if it still cannot be turned, disassemble the valve, clear the blockage, inspect the components for damage, and repair or replace the valve; avoid forcing the valve stem to turn to prevent it from breaking.

Fault 4: Valve adjustment failure. Symptoms include the valve being unable to regulate the flow or pressure of the working medium, and no change in parameters after adjustment. Causes: Wear or deformation of the valve plug; a loose valve stem; or a malfunction in the adjustment mechanism. Solution: Close the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the valve; disassemble the valve and inspect the valve plug for wear or deformation; if damaged, replace the valve plug promptly; tighten the valve stem and repair the adjustment mechanism to ensure smooth operation; if the valve is severely damaged, replace it immediately.

Fault 5: Safety valve malfunction. Symptoms include the safety valve failing to relieve pressure normally, failing to reset after pressure relief, or failing to sound an alarm when pressure is too high. Causes: Clogged or rusted safety valve plug; aged or damaged spring; broken lead seal. Solution: Shut down the boiler and reduce pressure to atmospheric pressure; disassemble the safety valve, clean debris from the valve plug, and remove rust; inspect the spring for signs of aging or damage and replace it promptly; reapply the lead seal, calibrate the safety valve, and ensure it can relieve pressure and reset normally, with accurate readings.

Note: When addressing valve malfunctions, you must first close the shut-off valves upstream and downstream of the valve to isolate the working fluid and ensure safety; never force the valve open or closed to avoid stem breakage or pipe damage; if the valve malfunction is severe and cannot be repaired on your own, contact professional maintenance personnel promptly to prevent safety incidents.

Boiler valves are critical components that control the flow of working fluid and regulate operating parameters.
