How to Choose Fuel for a Biomass Boiler?

The choice of fuel for a biomass boiler directly affects the boiler’s combustion efficiency, operating costs, and environmental performance. Many people are unsure how to select biomass fuel and may end up choosing low-quality fuel, which can affect boiler operation. Below is a detailed guide to selecting fuel for biomass boilers—easy to understand and designed to help you avoid common pitfalls.


Point 1: Prioritize Pelletized or Briquetted Fuels. Biomass fuels are categorized into loose materials (such as straw and wood chips) and pelletized or briquetted fuels (such as biomass pellets and briquettes). You should prioritize pelletized or briquetted fuels because they have higher density, higher calorific value, and burn more completely, which improves the boiler’s thermal efficiency and reduces fuel waste; Additionally, formed fuels are easy to store, resistant to moisture, and less prone to spillage, thereby reducing losses during storage. Loose materials, on the other hand, have low density, low calorific value, and burn incompletely. They are also inconvenient to store and prone to moisture and mold, which can impair combustion performance; therefore, they are not recommended.


Second: Pay attention to the fuel’s calorific value. Calorific value is a key indicator for biomass fuels; the higher the calorific value, the more heat generated during combustion, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced operating costs. When selecting fuel, choose biomass fuels with a calorific value between 18,000 and 22,000 kJ/kg, such as wood pellet or peanut shell pellets, which have a high calorific value and can meet the boiler’s energy requirements; avoid fuels with excessively low calorific values (such as straw with high moisture content or rotten wood chips), as these fuels burn incompletely, increasing fuel consumption and operating costs.


Third: Control the moisture content of the fuel. The moisture content of biomass fuel directly affects combustion efficiency. Excessively high moisture content leads to incomplete combustion, black smoke, reduced thermal efficiency, and increased ash buildup and corrosion in the boiler; conversely, excessively low moisture content makes the fuel prone to spontaneous combustion, posing a safety hazard. When selecting fuel, maintain its moisture content between 15% and 20%. Choose dry, mold-free fuel and avoid damp or moldy fuel.


Fourth: Select fuel with minimal impurities. Excessive impurities in biomass fuel (such as soil, stones, or metal particles) can impair combustion, increase boiler wear and ash buildup, and even damage boiler components (such as grates and heating coils). When selecting fuel, choose options with an impurity content below 3%. Carefully screen the fuel during selection to remove impurities and ensure its purity.


Point 5: Choose based on local resources. When selecting biomass fuel, consider local biomass resources and prioritize fuel that is readily available and inexpensive. For example, if there are wood processing plants nearby, choose wood chip pellets; if there are agricultural processing plants nearby, choose straw or peanut shell pellets. This approach reduces fuel procurement and transportation costs, improving cost-effectiveness.
