The water quality in industrial boilers directly affects their service life and safe operation. If the water quality does not meet standards, it can lead to serious malfunctions such as scaling, corrosion, and pipe bursts, thereby increasing maintenance costs and safety risks. Many people overlook water treatment, believing that “as long as water is added, the boiler will run.” In reality, water treatment is a critical component of routine boiler maintenance. First, clarify the water quality requirements. Second, select the appropriate water treatment method. There are two commonly used water treatment methods: first, softening, which uses an ion exchange unit to replace calcium and magnesium ions in the water, thereby reducing water hardness and preventing scaling—this is suitable for steam and hot water boilers; second, deoxygenation, which is necessary for high-temperature, high-pressure boilers to remove oxygen from the water and prevent corrosion of boiler components. Common deoxygenation methods include thermal deoxygenation and chemical deoxygenation.

Next, conduct routine water quality monitoring. Monitor the boiler water quality daily, testing parameters such as hardness, pH, and dissolved oxygen to ensure the water meets standards; if water quality exceeds limits, promptly adjust the treatment method—for example, by replacing ion exchange resin or adding deoxygenation agents; regularly sample and test the water inside the boiler—at least once per quarter—to ensure water quality remains stable.

Attention must also be paid to water replenishment and blowdown. During boiler operation, there will be some loss of working fluid, so it is necessary to promptly replenish with qualified softened water. When replenishing, pay attention to the water temperature to avoid cold water entering the high-temperature boiler directly, which could cause damage to components due to sudden thermal shock. Perform regular blowdowns to remove scale, impurities, and substandard water from the boiler and regulate water quality. During blowdown, control the volume and duration of discharge to avoid disrupting normal boiler operation.

Daily water quality monitoring and treatment must be performed, and water treatment equipment should be inspected regularly to ensure it operates properly, thereby guaranteeing the safe and stable operation of the boiler.
